Bangladesh Academy of Rural Development (BARD)

Bangladesh Academy of Rural Development (BARD) is an independent internationally reputed institution within the Department of Rural Development and Cooperatives.

On May 27, 1959, the Pakistan Village Development Academy was established to train officials involved in the implementation of the VAID (Village Agricultural and Industrial Development) scheme, informing them about the overall condition of villages, including the problems of neglected people. After independence, the Bangladesh Rural Development Academy was renamed BARD. Famous philosopher and social scientist, former ICS officer Akhtar Hamid Khan was its originator. To reduce rural poverty in many third-world nations, especially South Asia, the “Comilla Model” of rural development relies on two-level cooperatives, Thana Training and Development Centre and Thana Irrigation Program.

Its main objective is to help the socio-economic development of rural areas and rural poverty alleviation through training, research, and practical research in the field of rural development.
